World Milk Day is celebrated to highlight the many benefits of cow’s milk and milk products that confer human beings’ umpteen health benefits. The day was first commemorated by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations in 2001. This day is earmarked to value milk as global food and to popularise the dairy industry’s contribution to offering livelihood to millions of people across the world. You may be surprised to know that India is the largest producer of milk that accounts for 22% of global production and serves as an important source of economy and livelihood. This year, the celebration will start with a dairy rally from May 29 to May 31 and end on June 1 with World Milk Day.

This year’s theme is to bring attention to the climate change crisis and how the milk sector can lessen its impact on the environment. The key goal is to attain ‘Dairy Net Zero’ by decreasing greenhouse gas emissions over the next 30 years and promoting waste management to make the dairy industry sustainable.
