Undoubtedly, those small white bumps just under your eyes or somewhere on your face are a total downer when it comes to flaunting spotless, glowing skin. But do you know what these actually are? Often misconstrued as acne or warts, these ugly bumps are nothing but Milia, commonly known as ‘Milk Spots’.

So, What Exactly Is Milia?

Milia, scientifically termed as ‘milium cyst’, is a cluster of small, blister-like, dome-shaped, keratin-filled lumps formed on the skin that are usually white or yellow in color. They are usually painless and occur chiefly around the eyes, nose, cheeks, chin, neck and even in the torso and genitalia. Although, they are commonly noticed in children, but adults too have them due to a lack of proper skin care regime.

What Causes Milia?

The primary cause of milia is total absence of skin’s natural ability to exfoliate causing the dead cells to get trapped underneath the surface layer of the skin. The accumulation of trapped cells gradually gets keratinized and eventually turn hard to clog the pores as milia. However, in older children, teenagers and adults, milia usually occurs due to some sort of skin damage including  blistering injuries, burns, genodermatosis (an inherited genetic skin condition), sun damage, ageing skin, pore-clogging skin care products, and long-term use of steroid creams.

DIY Skin Care Ritual For Milia Spots
Ingredients for cleansing

Step 1: Cleansing

Lemon – Honey Cleanser

Ingredients:

2 tbsp lemon juice

2 tsp manuka honey

5 drops of jojoba oil

Method:

Mix all the ingredients in a small bowl.

Use a damp cotton ball to apply the solution all over your face.

Let it sit for 15 minutes.

Wash off with cool water.

Cover your head with a towel and bend over a large bowl filled with hot water.

Allow your face to absorb the steam to help open the pores.

How It Works:

Imbued with astringent and anti-inflammatory properties, lemon juice reduces the size of skin pores and helps in drying the milia spots. While honey soothes the affected area and prevents further microbial infections, jojoba oil controls oil production and inhibits acne and pimples.

Step 2: Exfoliation

Sugar-Castor Oil Scrub

Ingredients:

1 tbsp granulated sugar

1 tbsp castor oil

Method:

Whip up a coarse paste.

Apply it all over the affected areas.

Gently exfoliate in upward strokes for 10 minutes.

Wash off with luke-warm water.

How It Works:

Touted for its excellent exfoliative properties, sugar is excellent in inhibiting the accumulation of keratin beneath the skin surface and eliminating the stubborn lumps of milia over time. Castor oil not only absorbs excess oil but also helps in vanishing milia over time.
