What Is Sunscreen Made Of?

While you apply tons of it, do you know what sunscreen, your saviour is made of? First, we must know two types of sunscreens are available in the market. The physical sunscreen and the chemical sunscreen.

What Is A Physical Sunscreen?

Most physical sunscreens are made from mineral filters, such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide.  Both have been recognized as effective and safe by the Food and Drug Administration. These components help to create a physical barrier on the skin that bounces UV rays before they can penetrate the epidermis.

What Are The Constituents Of Chemical Sunscreen?

The key ingredients in chemical sunscreens are Octinoxate, Avobenzone, and Oxybenzone. These ingredients do not sit on skin trying to physically block UV rays. Instead, they absorb harmful UV rays before the skin soaks them completely.

Are There Any Drawbacks Of Chemical Sunscreen?

As the name says, a chemical sunscreen has relatively strong chemicals thus people with sensitive skin may experience redness, rash, or skin inflammation. A dermatologist must be consulted before using a chemical sunscreen. Having said that, due to the importance of sun safety, the FDA and the American Academy of Dermatology approve using both mineral and chemical sunscreens to cover unprotected skin. Two ingredients PABA and trolamine salicylate have been banned in chemical sunscreens and they should not be an ingredient in any sunscreen type.
