Yeast infection in children is also called as Candidiasis or moniliasis, infecting the skin and membranes secreting mucous. The main causative agent is Candida, a fungus, which is otherwise part of normal micro flora of the human body. However, yeast infection is very common and may be painful and itchy.

Children with the compromised immune system are more likely to develop a yeast infection. Warm and humid surroundings and damaged skin are other risk factors contribute to yeast infection in children.

Newborns may get yeast infection from affected mothers during delivery. Oral yeast infection in children is also called thrush which is more common in asthmatic children who take steroids and antibiotics for asthma. These drugs serve to cause the excess growth of yeast in the oral cavity.

Yeast infection may occur in diaper area of infant and cause severe diaper rash. The moist skin can become red and itchy.

  • Skin rashes
  • Fluid formation in pimples
  • Itching sensation
  • Inflammation and redness of genital organs (vagina and penis)
  • Pain in patches and small cuts developed at the extremities of mouth
  • Pus formation in nail beds and pain

Treatment

Treatment of yeast infection depends on the site of the infection. Mouth infection is treated with medicated mouthwash. Antifungal creams and lotions are recommended to treat mild yeast infections. Severe cases of infection need administration of oral antifungal and antibiotics medications to keep fungal infection at bay.

Prevention is the key to control yeast infections. Bottle nipples, pacifiers have to washed in very hot water to kill fungus. Diapers should be changed frequently at night to prevent yeast infections.
