A Sestamibi parathyroid scan also known as MIBI scan is a procedure performed to localize parathyroid adenoma, the main cause of hyperparathyroidism. A radiopharmaceutical or a radioactive agent, (a very mild and safe amount), called Sestamibi is injected into the veins of a patient with parathyroid disease or hyperparathyroidism which gets absorbed by the overactive parathyroid gland.

Adequate localization of parathyroid adenoma allows the surgeon to diagnose the overactive parathyroid gland and the potent causes of the bad parathyroid gland.
