Coronavirus is a family of viruses containing strains that cause potentially fatal diseases in mammals and birds. In humans, they typically spread via airborne droplets of fluid produced by infected individuals. The virus is named so due to the distinctive corona or 'crown' of sugary-proteins that projects from the outer surface. Being a zoonotic type, it originates from different species of animals, including bats, camels, cattle, and cats.

As per the reports of the Chinese Health Department, the virus belongs to the family of viruses that includes the Wuhan 2019 Novel Coronavirus, Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS). The new coronavirus that is currently afflicting the Chinese population has been found to have broken loose from the wet market of Wuhan.

The new coronavirus reporting mild to moderate upper-respiratory tract illnesses has already caused a devastating impact on the human population worldwide. Though the virus mostly remains dormant within the human body in the initial stages, it can soon become viable and cause chronic conditions similar to pneumonia and bronchitis.

Chinese authorities have already locked down cities and transport services, at the site of the epidemic. Although WHO is currently working closely with various global experts, and scientific researchers to rapidly expand knowledge on this new virus, it is still advisable to be aware of the causes, symptoms, prevention and medical care, in order to guarantee rapid treatment and complete recovery of the afflicted individual.
