Bronchitis is referred as an inflammation in the bronchial tube due to bacteria or virus that causes accumulation of mucus. Bronchitis can be acute or chronic.
Generally, acute bronchitis lasts for 5-10 days. It is contagious and easily affects children and the elderly. The main symptom of acute bronchitis is coughing which might continue for several weeks. Other symptoms may initially imitate the signs of cold or flu.
The symptoms for acute bronchitis include fever, sore throat, running nose, cough with pale or greenish sputum, nasal and chest congestion, shortness of breath, wheezing, body ache, fatigue and tiredness.
The influenza virus, para-influenza virus, rhinovirus, adenovirus, streptococcus etc. are the main causes of acute bronchitis infection. External factors like, tobacco, smoking, pollutants, and toxins are also responsible for causing this condition, but remain non-contagious.
Treatment:
Doctors recommend drinking lots of fluids, avoid caffeine and alcohol, rest as a part of home remedies. One can try over the counter pain relievers to decrease inflammation and fever, use humidifiers, avoid dairy products as they increase mucus secretions. Drinking ginger tea, hot water and honey also help in getting instant relief.
If the infection persists talk to your doctor for inhalers, antibiotics, NSAIDs and other options available for treatment.
