Dry, peeling lippies have always been the number one cause of concern for most women out there, owing to environmental pollution, dehydration, sun damage, insufficient care of lips, absence of proper makeup removal technique and poor-quality lipsticks. Additionally, the scorching sun and dry heat waves during the summer can be extremely brutal to the lips. The skin on the lips is quite thin and does not have sebum glands like our face to keep it moisturised, therefore harsh weather often makes them dry, cracked, and chapped. But with a little TLC during the summer months, you too can have soft and glossy lips naturally. And what’s better than using natural healing and moisturising ingredients and an SPF component to whip up your customised lip balm for that signature star pout?

DIY SPF-Imbued Lip Balms
Shea Butter And Beetroot Lip Balm
Ingredients:
1tsp vanilla extract
1 tbsp shea butter
1 tbsp beeswax
2 drops of rosemary oil
1 tsp beetroot powder
1 tsp zinc oxide
Method:
Melt the beeswax and shea butter in a double boiler
Add both the essential oils, beetroot powder and vanilla extract to it
Next, add the zinc oxide powder and stir to get a smooth mixture
Let the mixture cool down naturally
Next, slowly pour it into a lip balm container and solidify it in the freezer
Apply it on your lips 20 minutes before stepping out
Why It Works?
While shea butter smoothes chapped lips and provides intense nourishment, essential oils prevent infections. The addition of beetroot powder imparts a dark red colour to your lippies whereas vanilla extract exudes an incredible divine flavour. The addition of zinc oxide powder shields your lips from harmful sun rays.
Cocoa Butter And Coffee Lip Balm
Ingredients:
2 tsp beeswax pellets
1 tbsp cocoa butter
1 tsp sweet almond oil
1 tsp coffee powder
1 drop of cinnamon essential oil
1 tsp zinc oxide powder

Melt the cocoa butter and beeswax pellets in a double boiler and stir to get a smooth batter
Add the sweet almond oil, coffee powder, cinnamon oil and zinc powder to it while stirring
Let it cool down for some time and then pour it into small containers and refrigerate it for future use
Why It Works?
Cocoa butter mollifies peeling lips, forming a protective sheath on lips retaining moisture inside, sweet almond and cinnamon essential oil nourishes the skin and prevents further drying. The addition of coffee powder provides a warm nude shade to the lip balm and a strong flavour that lingers on your lips throughout the day. Sun protection comes from the use of zinc powder.
Mango Butter And Rose Lip Balm
Ingredients:
1 tbsp beeswax
2 tbsp mango butter
5 drops mint essential oil
2 drops of olive oil
1 drop of organic pink food colour
1 drop of rose essential oil
1 tsp zinc oxide powder
Method:
Take mango butter and beeswax in a double boiler and melt them completely
Switch off the flame, and add all the oils, organic food colour and zinc powder while whisking everything to get a smooth paste
Pour into lip balm containers and freeze for later use
Why It Works?
Replete Vitamin E and C in mango butter to shield the skin of the lips from various environmental stressors like pollution, sunlight, and even blue light from screens that might lead to premature ageing and damage. While olive oil nourishes irritated lips and prevents drying, the rose essential oil hinders bacterial infection while also delivering an enticing flavour to the lips. The addition of pink food colour provides a natural pinkish hue to the lips and the sun protection is delivered from zinc oxide.
