World Osteoporosis Day (WOD) is observed throughout the globe every year on October 20th depicting a year-long campaign dedicated to promoting awareness and educating people about the various factors, indications, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of this metabolic condition. WOD was originally endorsed by the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) along with the World Health Organization (WHO), in the year 1988-1999 which attempts to enlighten the general populace about this devastating bone disease.

What Is Osteoporosis?
Osteoporosis is a debilitating skeletal disorder characterized by low bone density, and micro-architectural erosion of bone tissue steering to bone fragility, and resultant risk of fracture. It is one of the most common reasons for a fracture among the elderly population.
In the case of osteoporosis, bones may weaken to such an extent that a crack may occur spontaneously with minor stress. This painful metabolic condition may also ensue from a number of diseases or treatments, including anorexia, hyperthyroidism, kidney disease, surgical removal of the ovaries, and alcoholism.

On that note, this year the International Osteoporosis Foundation campaigns with the theme for World Osteoporosis Day 2022 as ‘Step Up for Bone Health.’ This theme stipulates the need to take timely actions towards taking care and managing osteoporosis as well as awaking the people about the steps to be taken to stave off this painful condition. It primarily intends to encourage the general public to take proper care of their bone health immediately to curtail their future risk of osteoporosis and cracked bones.
And for achieving optimum bone health, WOD campaign also suggests five steps for the people. This includes:
- Including bone-healthy dietary options in their regular meal. These are foods that are augmented with calcium, protein, vitamins, and nutrients
- Incorporating a workout regimen for strength and physical fitness for at least 30-40 minutes a day
- Advising people to maintain their BMR to reduce the risk of obesity and excessive pressure on the bones
- Reduce and gradually stop the intake of alcohol and tobacco in any form
- Go for regular health evenings to be aware of any personal risk factors like diseases, genetics, allergy to medications, height loss, and menopause.
Hence, to prevent loss of bone density and conditions like osteoporosis and bone fracture in the advanced years, one must make it a point to start taking care of bone health at once. And what simpler way to do this, than tailoring your diet a bit.
