World Kidney Day is observed every year on March 12, with the chief objective of educating people about the importance of kidney wellness, as well as to reduce the incidence of kidney disease amongst the universal population. It is a global health day of high significance, held annually since the year 2006, jointly by the International Society Of Nephrology (ISN) and the International Federation Of Kidney Foundations (IFKF).
The theme for World Kidney Day 2020 is “Preventive Interventions To Avert The Onset And Progression Of Kidney Disease.”
Although being a non-communicable illness, kidney disease is, nevertheless, a chronic condition, requiring lifelong treatment and support. Current statistics indicate that kidney disease is a global burden, present in nearly 850 million people across the world, heavily affecting productivity and increasing healthcare expenses. As part of World Kidney Day, constant efforts are being made by the ISN, the IFKF and various other organizations worldwide, to raise awareness amongst the general public, so as to ensure kidney health for one and all. The activities include:
- Enlightening each and every person with key information, about the pair of bean-shaped organs i.e. the kidneys, as well as their vital role, in the filtration and elimination of impurities, food wastes and toxins from the system
- Advising high-risk groups, namely those with diabetes and hypertension, to undergo routine medical screening, as they are predisposed to obtaining Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)
- Urging healthy individuals to come forth to donate a kidney, as organ transplantation is the best treatment option for patients with kidney failure
The best way to care for the kidneys, apart from shielding them from CKD and its associated complications, is to consciously adopt a healthy lifestyle. Engaging in regular physical exercise, steering clear of alcohol and tobacco, ensuring sufficient rest for the body with a good night's sleep, all contribute immensely towards preserving renal functions. In addition, ample hydration by consumption of water, nourishing fluids like juices, as well as a balanced wholesome diet rich in essential nutrients, further expels kidney stones and augments renal activity. An ideal kidney-friendly diet comprises necessary amounts of carbs, fibers, proteins, healthy fats, calories, vitamins, besides being low on the content of the minerals - sodium, potassium and phosphorous. Antioxidant-rich foods must also be incorporated in generous amounts, as they flush out harmful free radicals from the system, remarkably assisting in maintaining kidney health.
