Scoliosis is a condition of the spinal cord, where the spinal cord tends to curve on one side. Scoliosis may be caused by co-morbid conditions like cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, spina bifida or birth defect.
It could be even genetic as the majority of the cases are seen among the adolescents between the ages of 10-12 years and sometimes even in infants.
However, scoliosis occurs in all ages and gender. It is mainly seen at the chest level and in the lower portion of the spinal cord.
One must avoid the common misconceptions that scoliosis is caused due to bad postures, carrying heavy objects, extensive travelling and sports injury. The actual reasons of scoliosis are still not known.

Diagnosis And Treatment
A thorough physical examination and detailed medical history help the doctor to diagnose the condition. MRI and CT scan are the best ways to diagnose scoliosis. Mild cases are treated with backbone braces, physical exercise, electrical stimulation of muscles and supplements. In cases of severity, surgery is preferred.
