GI motility disorder is aligned with GERD, chronic constipation, intestinal obstruction, and gastroparesis.

Main causes behind GI motility disorder include digestive muscle coordination due to muscle controlling peristalsis, and nerves or hormones governing contractions.

Irritable bowel syndrome, diabetes, oesophagal spasm, Hirschsprung's disease, scleroderma, achalasia can also cause GI motility disorder.

The signs and symptoms may include, constipation, faecal soiling, swelling in the stomach, gastritis, abdominal cramps, nausea and vomiting, acid reflux, diarrhoea, trouble swallowing, bloated stomach.

These conditions can be of serious concern in children where symptoms may affect eating and passage of stool, leading to significant weight loss.

In GI motility disorders the muscle contraction and relaxation process are disoriented affecting the normal passage of food from the oesophagus to the stomach, as well as affecting the passage of food from the stomach to the intestine.

Treatment:

Doctors may suggest lifestyle changes like eating fibre-rich diet, drinking lots of fluids. Use of laxatives is also recommended for a normal bowel movement.
