The chief objective of this significant health day is to bring affront further examples of proven medications providing unsatisfactory results in treating and curing several microbial infections.
This year the theme of World Antimicrobial Awareness Week (WAAW) 2022 is ‘Preventing antimicrobial resistance together’ and this initiative is a collaboration of The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) and the World Health Organization (WHO).
What Is Antimicrobial Resistance?
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) mainly arises when microbes such as bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites mutate or change over time and no longer concede to the set medications, making infections harder to treat while intensifying the risk of disease spread rendering depreciated condition and sometimes even death. As a result of the microbe’s resistance towards the drug, antibiotics and other antimicrobial medicines become inefficient with time and they no longer help eradicate the microbe making it extremely problematic or impossible to treat the infection.
So, What Are Antibiotics You May Ask?
Antibiotics are the most widespread medications that are primarily used to destroy or inhibit the growth of any bacteria. Although most people have an innate immunity to ward off common germs and bacterial manifestations, these synthetic compounds primarily come to the rescue when our body’s natural immune system is compromised or it does not work effectively to demolish disease-causing bacteria and prevent infections.
But owing to a lack of credible knowledge regarding the usage of antibiotics, most people use them inaccurately. Although it is an antibacterial drug, it is frequently taken as an alternative when someone is suffering from viral conditions like cough and cold. Overexposure to these antibiotics repeatedly not only leads to numerous side effects but also it might make the bacteria resistant to the drug formulation.
