Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a mental disorder, diagnosed mainly in children and can continue until adulthood. Children suffering from ADHD are hyperactive, impulsive, and face trouble in paying attention. This behaviour affects their social and personal life both. It occurs more in males than females.
For parents to know if their children are having an ADHD and consider medical attention, the following symptoms are seen:
- Distracted easy and often
- Unable to follow directions
- Self-focused
- Interrupting
- Impatient
- Unstable emotions
- Lacks focus
- Inability to finish an instructed task that require more brain activity
- Not paying attention and making silly mistakes more often
- Forgetful about everyday activities
- Unorganized
- Daydreaming
Adults with ADHD appears to be having these symptoms along with additional signs as low self-esteem, work issues, substance abuse and addiction, frustration, boredom, depression, relationship issues, and troubled reading.
However, the exact cause of ADHD is not known, but some factors that trigger the ADH condition are described as;
- Inherited reasons
- Chemical imbalance in brain, inactivity of certain parts of brain can cause ADHD
- During pregnancy: lack of nutrition intake, smoking and alcohol consumption during pregnancy can lead to ADHD in children, due to improper brain development
- Toxin exposure (lead) and brain injuries (frontal lobe) can cause ADHD condition.
There is no permanent cure available to prevent ADHD. Treatment options basically include medication and psychotherapies.
