A toothache is a pain in and around the tooth that is caused by tooth decay, abscessed tooth, damaged filling and infected gums. It is caused when microorganisms survive on the food stuffs, that the individual eats. The microorganisms form on a sticky plaque that attaches itself to the surface of the individual’s teeth.

The microbes synthesize certain acids in the plaque that penetrate through the hard-white coating of the teeth enamel and create cavity. In severe conditions of tooth decay, there will be an extreme pain in the tooth.

Accumulation of food substances between the teeth spaces causes inflammation or even infection of the tooth root or gums. Tooth sensitivity is also triggered upon taking cold and hot food products, being infected with a cold and any seasonal infections.

  • Fever
  • Infection in the mouth
  • Pain when biting
  • Reddishness of gums
  • Swollen gums
  • Difficulty eating and drinking
  • Unpleasant discharge of smell while breathing and
  • Tooth sensitivity

Treatment

A regular salt water rinse and cold compress application can be a remedy for minor ache. Besides that, follow a good oral hygiene practices like brushing regularly with fluoride containing toothpaste and flossing with an antiseptic mouth wash. If toothache persists for more than two days with fever it is advisable to consult a dentist.
