Mosquitoes are tiny creatures that trouble us around the clock. They cause several near fatal diseases like malaria, dengue, chikungunya and yellow fever. A lot of mosquito repellents available in the market containing DEET (Diethyltoluamide) are effective at driving away the bugs, but are full of harmful chemicals that cause other health problems. The good news is that preventive measures go a long way in driving off the mosquitoes.
Check for Stagnating Water
Look around your place for any sources of standing water. As a female mosquito requires tiny amounts of water to lay her eggs, even a bottle cap full of rainwater is enough. Make sure all your drains are flowing freely. Even drinking water bowls for pets are a source of standing water for mosquitoes to breed in, so change drinking water for pets frequently.
Plant Herbs around Doors & Windows.
Plant lemongrass, basil (Tulsi) and rosemary as mosquitoes hate the smell of these herbs. Even if you don't have a garden place them in pots or containers near doors and windows. Use homemade candles and sprays made of these herbs to keep mosquitoes away.
Wipe Out Habitats Favourable to Mosquitoes
Clear up lump of dry leaves as they are ideal breeding ground for mosquitoes. Use bark chips to absorb water in places where water gets collected after rain. Trim grass & weeds as mosquitoes love to hide out in overgrown gardens. Inside the house, clear away clothes and cover up the dirty clothes hamper, as mosquitoes seek dark corners during the day, coming out at night to feast on sleeping humans.
Use Home-Made Natural Citronella Candles
The smell of citronella candles puts off mosquitoes because of its strong scent. Use these candles to keep mosquitoes at bay so you can enjoy your evening.
Avoid Perfume and Strong-Smelling Shampoos
The heavy, artificial smell of perfumes and shampoo attracts mosquitoes so try not to use them. Fabric conditioners and strong-smelling sunscreens will also attract them - try to wear as little artificial scent as possible.
