Veins are one of three most important blood vessels that carry deoxygenated blood from all over the body to the heart. Certain aberration can change the structure of these veins that leads to “Varicose veins”. It is a disorder of veins in which the veins of certain body parts become twisted and distended. It often occurs in the subcutaneous tissue of the legs and is apparent.

Varicose veins do not cause any symptoms in majority cases. Varicose veins can cause a range of symptoms such as discomfort in the legs, heaviness, itching, and aching. Leg swelling is an uncommon symptom of varicose veins but in some individual can cause great discomfort. Unilateral leg swelling with large varicose veins is the commonest most typical presentation. Affected veins sometimes may remain occluded permanently. Other symptoms include bleeding, skin changes, and ulcers however these are found very rarely.

Varicose veins are often associated with the aging, as people grow old; elasticity of their veins loses, and become distorted. Venous reflux and pelvic vein reflux play important role in the development of such conditions. Obesity and pregnancy are also a major cause for this condition. Recent study also shows the heredity linkage of the disease. Prolonged standing, abdominal straining and leg injuries could also result in varicose veins.
