In a recent study published in BMC Plant Biology journal, a draft genome covering 374 million bases of the Tulsi herb was sequenced and the main enzymes responsible for the synthesis of secondary metabolites which have medicinal properties was explored.

Of the 14 metabolites mapped, 8 have anti-cancer properties and the remaining 6 have antifungal, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, and cardio protective properties.
