The World Health Organisation (WHO) declared JN.1 variant as another new Variant Of Interest (VOI) last week, just as the global population was heaving a huge sigh of relief that the COVID-19 pandemic was on its way out after wreaking havoc on health and upending all sense of normalcy for the last three consecutive years. Former AIIMS director and senior pulmonologist Dr. Randeep Guleria highlighted that while the new Covid sub-variant JN.1 is producing a sudden infection rise, it is not causing serious infections or hospitalization.
Barely when people had stopped wearing face masks in public, did the new variant make an entry, raising awareness among the general populace. The health authorities and government have already advised the general public to wear masks and take preventive measures to avoid the infection. However, the global healthcare community, which has been working around the clock to treat infected patients, is at a considerably higher risk of getting the sub-variant JN.1 viral strain and becoming ill with coronavirus disease.

- Head covers to conceal hair and head of healthcare workers from coming in direct contact with viral particles
Moreover, it is important to keep in mind that COVID-appropriate behaviour of frequent hand sanitizing and maintaining social distancing of at least 1 – 2 meters from infected patients must be adhered to by workers wherever possible even in a healthcare setting, to prevent acquiring COVID-19.
