Miscarriage is a condition which results in the loss of a foetus before the 20th week of pregnancy. It is also known as spontaneous abortion and different from general abortion.
General Abortion on the other is the intentional loss of foetus at a very early stage of pregnancy due to psychological and social reasons.
Miscarriage is a natural condition which may happen in any clinical pregnancies with a chance of 10-25%. The causes that lead to conditions of miscarriage may vary among women. It can be genetic, physical health, infection, diet, age or environmental conditions.
The main signs to identify if a woman is having a miscarriage are:
- A backache which can vary from mild to severe level
- Vaginal bleeding
- Clotted tissue discharge from the vagina
- Abdominal pain
- Fever
- Lack of energy
Females with thyroid or diabetic condition, weak immune system, uterine abnormalities, and hormonal issues are at a higher risk to have spontaneous abortions. Recurrent abortions i.e. women who already have undergone 2-3 miscarriages or women above 35 years of age are also at a higher risk of having a miscarriage.
It's a fact that every miscarriage cannot be prevented, but it does not mean a woman cannot conceive again in future.
Therefore, taking precaution like avoiding alcohol, smoking, and unhygienic environment; performing light stretching exercises for improved fetal health, improving diet plans before and during pregnancy along with maintaining a healthy weight can be useful in having a normal and healthy pregnancy.
It is always recommended to consult a physician before planning to conceive.
