What is Immunisation?

When a person is made immune or resistant to an infectious disease, usually by giving a vaccine, they are protected from life threatening diseases. The process of making an individual or child resistant to a disease is known as Immunisation.

Vaccines under India's Universal Immunization Programs (UIP)

  • BCG (Bacillus Calmette Guerin)

  • Measles
  • Hepatitis B
  • Tetanus Toxoid
  • JE vaccination (in selected high disease burden districts)
  • Hib containing Pentavalent vaccine (DPT+HepB+Hib) (In selected States)

Hepatitis B - Liquid Vaccine Hepatitis B Intra-muscular 5 Birth dose (within 24 hours) for institutional deliveries. Primary three doses at 6, 10 & 14 weeks.
DPT (Diphtheria, Pertussis and Tetanus Toxoid) - Liquid vaccine Diphtheria, Pertussis and Tetanus Intra-muscular 5 Three doses at ages 6, 10 & 14
Measles - Lyophilized vaccine Measles Sub-cutaneous 2 1st Dose- Age 9-12 months. 2nd Dose - Age 16-24 months.
TT (Tetanus Toxoid) - Liquid vaccine Tetanus Intra-muscular 2 10 years and 16 years. 2 doses for pregnant woman (Single dose if vaccinated within past 3 years)
JE vaccination (in selected high disease burden districts) Lyophilized vaccine Japanese Encephalitis(Brain fever) Sub-cutaneous 2 1st Dose- Age 9-12 months. 2nd Dose Age - 16-24 months. (Approximately 6 months after vaccination drive)
