Cleft is referred to a split both in upper lip and palate of the mouth and can be immediately identified at the time of birth. Cleft palate and cleft lip are birth deformities of the face and are most common among the congenital abnormalities. The cleft pallet or lip are associated with a number of genetic conditions.

1. A cleft or opening on the lip and palate affecting either one or both sides of the face.

2. A cleft or opening on the lips appearing in small grooves in the lips and may extend through upper lip, palate and to the bottom of the nose.

3. A cleft or opening in the palate which does not impact of the appearance of the mouth. 

Symptoms and Diagnosis: 

In rare cases, a cleft can occur at the soft palate, at the back or mouth, covered under the linings which may remain unnoticed at the time of birth. However, it is also treatable and can be easily diagnosed when signs are visible. These signs include: 

1. Problem while feeding

2. Issues while swallowing

3. Nasal tone voice

4. Chronic ear infection 

The external environmental conditions during pregnancy can also lead to cleft lip and palate. Diabetes in the expecting mothers and obesity are also considered among the risk factors for the development of cleft lip and palate. 

Treatment:

Children with this condition may also face social, emotional, and behavioral problems. However, nowadays simple surgeries can easily give a normal appearance, thereby allowing better living.
