It was Baahubali actress Tamaannah who was one of the first Indian celebs to talk about butter coffee on an Instagram post. If you thought butter; loaded with saturated fats was of no help in burning calories, this new brew is gaining ground worldwide with fitness enthusiasts guzzling it down as it helps in curbing the appetite to improving mental focus, achieving smooth skin tone to ultimately losing those extra kilos.
Invented by Silicon Valley based investor Dave Asprey, butter coffee is usually made with grass-fed butter (butter made from organic milk), along with coconut oil as it has MCT (medium chain triglyceride) mixed with black coffee.
It is believed that both MCT and butter play an important role in the functioning of liver by slowly breaking medium chain triglycerides ensuring a slower release of caffeine and making the stomach feel super filling. Besides coconut oil supports the production of high-density lipoprotein (HDL or good cholesterol) for a healthy heart.
While many celebrities, sports stars are still experimenting with butter coffee in India, it was actress Tamannaah Bhatia who made it popular after sharing a video on her Instagram account. The Baahubali actress swears by its benefits as it helps her to stay away from carbs, maintains her blood sugar, loaded with energy for longer hours and weight loss.
However, many nutritionists in India are cautioning against lapping up the new habit without consulting experts.
Mumbai based nutritionist Priya Kathpal believes coffee, butter, MCT have their own individual benefits in weight management. “Some may want to consume as a part of their keto diet but it is not compulsory. It should be taken in right amounts with expert advice on an empty stomach or as a pre-workout. It is ideal to use freshly grounded organic coffee beans to brew this beverage.”
While there are many types of recipes doing rounds on how to brew your Butter Coffee, founder and CEO of GOQii fitness App Vishal Gondal shares his desi version on his blog.
Ingredients:
2 ½ tablespoon Blue Tokai organic Coffee or any other single origin organic coffee
1 tablespoon 100% Pure MCT Oil ( This is available on Amazon.in)
1-2 tablespoons Parsi Dairy Farm’s White Butter (unsalted) or use Ghee
Method:
Brew 1 cup of coffee using filtered water, just off the boil, using 2 1/2 heaping tablespoons freshly ground Blue Tokai Coffee beans
Add in 1 tablespoons of MCT Oil to the hot coffee (It’s STRONG – start with 1 tsp. and work up over several days).
Add 1-2 tablespoons white butter
Mix it all in a blender for 20-30 seconds until it is nice and frothy like a latte
How does it taste?
It tastes like rich, frothy latte. Just ignore those tiny droplets of fat from the butter and oil – they are called micelles. These micelles in fact help your body to digest the beverage very easily.
