Acid reflux is a condition that causes burning sensations in lower chest, also called as heartburn. It is a common disease that affects individuals mostly on daily or weekly basis. It happens due to backflow of stomach acids to food pipe.
Acid reflux is among common gut problems identified by hospitals. If it happens more than twice a week, it can be diagnosed as “gastroesophageal reflux diseases (GERD).” The common symptoms to identify acid reflux include;
- Heart burn i.e. a burning sensation in stomach and abdominal area. It can also move to chest and throat, causing discomfort
- Burps
- Bitter or sour taste acidic fluid back flowing in throat
- Bloating stomach
- Black coloured stool or vomits. In cases of damaged inner linings, it can be bloody as well
- Midnight chocking or coughing, causing disturbed sleep
- Bad breath
- Bleeding or swollen gums
- Hiccups
- Trouble in swallowing
- Sudden weight loss
- Sore throat, coughing, and dryness
- Discomfort during crouched and laying down positions
Acid reflux does not impact on heart and is caused by increased acid back flow in oesophagus. It can happen because of a leaky valve, hiatal hernia, and many other reasons. Because of acid backflow, there is an improper acid amount in stomach, affecting digestion, which leads to discomforting symptoms.
Ageing, underdeveloped digestive system, metabolic diseases, medication, and inappropriate dietary and lifestyle habits can cause acid reflux. The acid reflux treatment options include antacids, H2 blockers, proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), dietary supplements such as probiotics, and specific diet menu for acid reflux condition.
