Millions of people around the world are affected by carpal tunnel syndrome, which is a painful condition of hands. The triangular space formed by the connective tissue and bones is referred to as carpal tunnel. The carpal tunnel has tendons along with median nerve. This syndrome is also classified as an occupational hazard or workplace risk.
This condition is characterized by numbness, swollen hands, difficulty to move hands, weakness, tingling, and pain caused due to the compression and trapping of the median nerve. The risk associated with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome increases with the people who perform multitasks such as mechanical activities, working on computer and typing.
The syndrome worsens with weight gain, water retention and over use of hands. People usually working on computers, cash counters, musicians, mechanical works, tailoring or textiles and a few others are highly risked with this syndrome. The cause of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is associated with bad postures, bad or continued hand movements, and repetitive behaviors at the workplace or any daily activity. However, certain co-morbid health issues are also related to causing CTS, which are hypothyroidism, obesity, diabetes, weakness, arthritis, or prolonged injury.
Medications such as, anti-inflammatory help ease swelling and pain. Occupational therapies and usage of braces also help in CTS cases. However, treatment is completely dependent on the person by changing the repetitive tasks and adhering to good postures. In severe cases one may opt for Carpal tunnel release operation. Exercise and lowering the intensity of repetitive hand related works help the best.
