Atopic Dermatitis is a skin disease, a form of eczema which can be long lasting. Mainly it starts in early stages after birth or during childhood. Family history of atopic dermatitis, as well as asthma and hay fever showed more chances of developing the same in new born.
According to studies, 13% of American children have atopic dermatitis. It is an immune system derived inflammatory disease, caused by cluster of genes and environmental factors.
The main symptoms to identify the atopic dermatitis in children includes:
- Reddening of skin
- Itching
- Dryness and scaly rashes
- Fluid bumps which can leak after scratch
- Change in skin pattern over ears, eyes and lips
- Skin darkening around eyelids
In case of infants, the itching starts around elbows, knees or face, which might spread to other body parts. Although the specific cause of atopic dermatitis is still not know, however, there are some explanations connecting to its occurrence:
- Genetic factors: family history with allergies, asthma or eczema can cause children to have atopic dermatitis.
- Immune system: an underdeveloped immune system can affect the skin’s ability to protect infections.
- Environmental factors: non suitable weather conditions such as extreme cold, dry or hot temperatures can affect sensitive skin types .
There are various treatment options available to avoid atopic eczema. The treatment is given based on age, health, medical history, and severity of disease. Some “corticosteroid cream, antibiotics, antihistamines” etc. are used as treatment options. Using moisturizers, keeping affected areas covered, lukewarm bath, and staying away from irritants on regular basis are other recommended precautions.
