Abdominal aortic aneurysm is a condition associated with chronic deposition of plaque or sticky deposition in the abdominal aortic arteries. This condition occurs in the large arteries of the abdomen connecting the aorta of the heart. Abdominal aortic aneurysm is a slowly progressive condition; and if ignored for a longer period of time it may result into bursting of aortic arteries. This condition is mainly seen amongst adults over 65 years of age. Men have higher chances of developing abdominal aortic arteries women.
Deposition of plaque causes pressure of the blood on the wall of the artery causing unusual bulging of the aorta or medically aortic aneurism. Abdominal aortic aneurism is mainly caused due to atherosclerosis or abnormal deposition of fat and/or cholesterol in the walls of the arteries. Abdominal aortic aneurism is also caused due to following factors.
Risk Factors:
- High Blood Pressure
- Aortic Infection From Bacterial And/Or Fungal
- Stress Or Trauma
- Use Of Tobacco And Alcohol
- Genetic Inheritance
Signs And Symptoms:
- Deep, constant abdominal as well as back pain, which would generally be radiating towards buttock or legs.
- Excessive unusual sweating and/or clamminess
- Dizziness and/or nauseatic feeling
- Unusually rapid heart rate
- Shortness of breath
- Low blood pressure
Diagnosis And Treatment:
Abdominal aortic aneurysm is easily detected through ultrasound examinations, X-ray analysis, and angiography. However, patients are advised to quit smoking immediately and prescribed drugs to control high blood pressure and lower cholesterol levels to delay progressive damage.
